"Great for weddings, garden parties and flute lesson sight reading":  Jennifer Cluff, flutist of Vancouver Island, recommending our Mozart and Scarlatti flute duet arrangements, in her blog of 26 April 2008.
"A great collection of works arranged mostly for flute duet" : Dr John Ranck

 1. A Stannard senior. The Norwich March. adapted for the violin German Flute and Guitar.
This is a trio for 2 violins or flutes and bass (e.g. bassoon). There is an arrangement appended in a different key for 2 guitars. The initials L.L. at the foot of the page may refer to the publisher Longman, Lukey &co. This is a facsimile of a print circa 1770.

2. Anon. The Dorsetshire March. For two German Flutes and a bass. Appended is a transposition for solo guitar. This is a facsimile of a print circa 1775.
The intials W.F. appear at the foot of the page and are thought to be the imprint of William Forster, the London publisher. William Forster (1739-1808) was the publisher in London of Haydn's op50 string quartets. His son, also William (1764-1824) continued the business.
We are grateful to Dr Alan Radford for pointing out that the identical tune, but with different second and third parts, appears under the title "The Wiltshire militia's march or Ld Bruce's" in
William Crawshaw "English airs" an ms possibly written in the 1760s or 1770s and originally belonging to the Leeds Waits. University of Leeds, Brotherton Special Collections MS 1751. Other marches appear in the collection. Lord Bruce did have a connection with the Wiltshire Militia.
It also exists as a duet version in Longman & Lukey's Art, (in miniature) of blowing or playing on ye German Flute London circa 1775. Modern publication in Janice Boland Method for the one-Key flute. univ of California Press 1998

3. Anon. March of the XVth Regiment for two violins or German flutes. A trio for 2 violins or flutes plus bass (e.g. bassoon). Appended is an arrangement for harp , in a different key. This is a facsimile of a print of circa 1790.
The same tune, with identical phrase marks but without second and third parts, appears in "Compleat Instructions for the FIFE ..... London, Printed for J Skillern No17 St Martin's Lane...." pg 26 "March of the 15th Regt." Published late 18th or early 19th century - modern facsimile edition  by Performers' Facsimiles New York number 28158.

The above three short pieces may be arrangements of marches intended for or adopted by local militia rather than regular regiments (??)

6. W.A. Mozart. Sonatinas arranged for flute duo.
In about 1783 Mozart wrote a set of five divertimeni for three basset horns. (K439b). The scarcity of basset horns has meant that these pieces are usually played on, and much better known for, the combination of two clatinets and bassoon. Early in the nineteenth century movements were selected from these five divertimenti and published as a set of six piano sonatinas. Called the "Six Viennese Sonatinas" they have been popular with amateur and novice piano players ever since.
Derek Poole has now arranged the sonatinas for two flutes, ensuring that they are playable on the one-keyed flutes of Mozart's time. Copyright Derek Poole 2007, non-commercial copying is welcome.

8. Mozart Miscellany.
Arrangements for two and three one-keyed flutes from various Mozart sources.

Sonata KV 46d. Comprising an allegro and a pair of Menuets in C major this has been transposed into D and transcribed for flutes. It was one of a pair of sonatas written in August or September 1768. Modern sources vary in their ascription of the original instumentation. These pieces are variously described as being for keyboard solo, violin and cello duo, violin and bass (i.e. violin and  keyboard continuo). We hope you enjoy this two flute arrangement by Derek Poole.

Menuett and trio in G. This is number 11 in the 1759 Notenbuch fur Maria Anna (Nannerl) compiled by Leoplold Mozart. The exact authorship is in debate. Originally in F it has been arranged for three flutes.

Menuet in C. This is the Menuett and trio  which appears as number 21 in the notebook for Nannerl compiled by Leopold Mozart. Again the exact authorship is unknown. Arranged flute duo.

Rondo in D.   Arranged from KV485 for two flutes. As usual this arrangement fits the one keyed flutes of Mozart's time.    KV4485 Flute 1        KV485 Flute 2

 9. Mathees flute Sonata in D
The Gidde collection includes a Sonata in D for flute and continuo. It appears to be a mid to late eighteenth century work but is the only flute piece by this composer listed in Frans Vester's "Flute Music of the 18th Century". If anyone knows more about this composer we would be pleased to hear from you.
Derek Poole has prepared a basic realisation of the figured bass to serve as the starting point for performance. Non-commercial copying is welcomed.

10. Vanhall.
"Six Solos or Sonatas for a Flute or Violin with a thoroughbass for the Harpsichord" were published in London by J Bland who gives the composer as C Vanhall.
Both the Gidde Collection catalogue and Frans Vester's Catalogue give the composer as J B Vanhal (or Wanhall).
The solo (flute) part has a wide range including bottom c# and c. Perhaps Vanhall had in mind the newer multi keyed flutes with extended bottom joints which were in favour especially amongst wealthy amateurs in the late 18th century.
Transcription and realisation copyright D Poole 2008.

11. Cervetto sonatas.
Giacobbe (Giacomo?) Basevi  known as "Cervetto" wrote a set of eight sonatas for flute and continuo. They were published in London as his Op3. Charles  Burney mentions him as having been a cellist in London  in 1744.
We present here transcriptions and realisations from the print housed in the Gidde collection and availavble from them free on-line. The continuo realisation, by Derek Poole, is to be regarded as as suggestion only. For the original figures we refer you to the online copy in the Gidde Collection, or the facsimile edition by Studio per Edizioni Scelte (Archivum Musicum Flauto traversiere no 34).
